First of all, where are you located? Craigslist has many listings for the items you are in need of.

As for organization, start with three boxes clearly marked as follows: ';Trash'; ';Move to another location'; and ';Good Will'; then start sorting and don't stop. As you think up things write it on a sticky and paste it to the area that you would like to place it. For example, if you think you need a large bulletin board by the kitchen phone, write it on a sticky and place it on the wall where the board will be placed. When you go to Wal Mart or Ikea or the thrift store, make a list of what you need and buy it. Good luck!
So where is the link?

I am really interested in designing my own website Can anyone help with advice ?

My wife is about to be made redundant. She has a small business which has potential which I would like to promote via a website.I'm about to purchase Dreamweaver 8 as I'm told its the best. Can a novice build a decent website with Dreamweaver or is it too difficult as my neighbour says.Does anybody know a more user friendly package or should I stay with Dream weaver(I've not bought it yet so I don't know how difficult it may be ).I would be greatful for Yahoo subscribers advice. Many thanksI am really interested in designing my own website Can anyone help with advice ?
Hello,

The answer in my opinion is DONT buy dreamweaver version 8 yet, dreamweaver is a VERY sophisticated web authoring program and its NOT for a novice user despite what other people might say to you. Its like buying a jaguar car before you've even passed your driving license. Dreamweaver will take you ages to learn from the ground up, No! there is no need to make life harder than it needs to be. Start off more slowly.

Take it from me I used to work in the computer and IT industry for over ten years and I am trained to MCSE level but now IT is just my hobby. I have built numerous websites over the years.

To build a new website from scratch use a simple program like Frontpage which is a Microsoft website building program (avoid MS publisher which is a DP %26amp; Web program). FrontPage will enable you to learn the very basic website construction methods, techniques and ideas, skills required. One of the best things you should look at is learning the HTML tagging language that most web pages use in the creation, get a good book on HTML %26amp; On Frontpage.

Once you have created %26amp; uploaded your first pages or first few websites then you can seriously move onto the more fancy and sophisticated programs like dremweaver and photoshop.

In other words people are in such a frantic rush these days, No!! learn the basics first and DONT be in a hurry. Build a good solid foundation for your websites and the remaining stuff will fail into place later on.

**My other advise would be!!**

Remember a website is a tool used to communicate a message, or to provide information or to convay meaning to other people.

**Its literally your shop front and it can potentially reach a vast number of people you wouldnt otherwise reach.

**Think it terms of who your potential audiance might be (who will visit your site and why?).

**And finally, DONT add trendy or fancy website feature's like flash animation. Why? because what matters most is Content, Content, Content!!. The sites content is what matters most.

Its the same as Hollywood films full of clever CGI special effects but that's all the film consists of but how utterly boring? why? because it there's No! story to the film, No plott, its utterly vacuous etc. Well its the same with websites.

Good Luck hope that helps?

IRI am really interested in designing my own website Can anyone help with advice ?
dream weaver is best but it takes time to get use to using it
I use Adobe products they are after all the industry standard. but adobes web site creation tool is InDesign. It took me probably 2 days to learn, and now im flying through websites. you can check out my first website ever made at www.PixelLogic.us

but i would be happy and willing to assist her with questions about InDesign. Dreamweaver is cheaper ($400) Indesign($600)

both are NOW owned by adobe. but after you use a special discount you can get Indesign for $185. but you'll also need a photoeditor. I use photoshop......but photoshop elements (comes free with certain scanners/printers) works just fine.

the book that i learned to make websites is called ';Learning Web Design'; -2nd edition by O'Reilly its a great book to learn the foundations of html

jlp.media@yahoo.com
Dreamweaver is the best you can buy, but it is extremely expensive, and unless you're a professional web developer you're unlikely to use more than 10% of the features. I AM a professional and I still don't use more than 20%.

If you've already bought it, I recommend buying the Dreamweaver Accelerated text book, it's a great resource for both a beginner and an advanced user who wants to brush up on their skills.

You would definitely benefit from taking a basic web design course at your local college. But beware... a lot of colleges stick to Microsoft training packs, which means a web design class would use the dreaded Frontpage. check before signing up.
Go to www.tile.net/ and scroll down the page to the appropiate link/s
You should be able to find a web designer course at your local college. They teach it in two ways, first with software, then the old fashioned way- which is a lot longer but I think its better as you get a better knowledge of how it works, good luck.
Search Site Spinner, you can download it free and try it for 30 days. It works great!
Dreamweaver is supposed to be the best, but can be an absolute sod to learn how to use properly.

Personally I prefer NETOBJECTS FUSION, which I think is about half the price....... and easier to use - though my copy was supplied free with my webhosting package from http://www.1and1.co.uk

I can usually knock together %26amp; upload a usuable website with it in less than half an hour.

It's basically a WYSIWYG package that allows you to knock together webpages like you would on a Desktop publishing package, and you can still use HTML, etc to fine tune the site as you learn.

To learn more about Netobjects Fusion, check out http://www.netobjects.com/

Hi, Yes a novice can put together a decent site, just rememebr dont get too flashy, clean and simple. It will load quicker and should give all the relevant information on the First page.

You can buy your own, dedicated domian name, Whatever @ whereever.co.uk, . com etc,. through various companies but I would recommend Fasthost. ( costs, depending on the extension, but .co.uk can be 拢10 for two years. It will include a dedicated email address for the same name.

As for building the site. I have been building websites for a few years. mainly for friends and relativesd at first, more recently as a supplemental income. I am looking at redundancy in 12 months and will hopefully turn it into a full time business. I have learned a litle about various webpage languages in that time but about 7 years ago came across a great web design site www.homestead.com that use a simple drag and drop system. It is such an easy process. It does cost but then you get what you pay for. Should your wife want to start selling through her site then you can add that benefit as you go forward. They do offer a 30day free trial. Best of luck and Enjoy.

  • Can anyone give me advice on designing greeting cards?

i am looking to designing an engagement card but have no ideas where to start any ideasCan anyone give me advice on designing greeting cards?
    Hi

I used to make cards a while back and I always found the simple but unusual ones had the best inpact. Is the card for a younger or older couple? I think its nice to personalise the card with the couple's names. You can buy lots of lovely card toppers on Ebay which is easy and very effective just do a search on ebay for engagement card toppers.

You could also try a website called www.madaboutcards.com they've loads of easy to follow projects to inspire you, I used to find them very useful.

Good luck but most of all....enjoy!!!!

Need advice from a teacher/instructor who has experience designing a course/syllabus?

I teach ESL class (as hobby) and Im trying to come up with a directory of all the different subjects that someone can teach. The list seems to be endless.

Is there some prexisting category list for something like this? Im thinking i could just use the dewey system but maybe thats overkill?

thanks for any ideasNeed advice from a teacher/instructor who has experience designing a course/syllabus?
I'm not Pagan, and my name isn't Dan. I use the name ';Pagan Dan'; because it's Chinese for ';bacon and eggs';. It amuses me to have a pen name.

I teach ESL in a junior high in Hualien County on the east coast of Taiwan. I have also taught kindergarten, elementary, high school, adults, and English for special purpose. I am frequently required to design and plan my own entire courses from start to finish.

Please email me, and I will be pleased to give you some pointers that may or may not be useful to you.

You're right about the overkill. It is better to ';tailor'; your work to your specific students.

The difference between your work and mine is (I guess) that your students speak a variety of languages and are trying to learn English.

About half of my students are Ami (local aboriginal folks), and the other half are ethnic Chinese. They all speak Taiwanese instead of Mandarin.

I'll see what I can do when I hear from you.

Since the world is in a dark place right now, I think citrusy colors would be nice. Lime greens, yellows, bright, neon pinks, oranges, neon purples. Neon colors in general.

I want to go into Graphic Design as a career but I'm a little stuck on A Level options. Any advice?

I'm in yr 11 now, and I desperately want to be a graphic designer when I leave.

Other than psychology, it's the only career i'm remotely interested in, and I'm nowhere near smart enough for psychology, as I've heard that it's strongly adviseable to have maths or/and sciences which I suck at.

Anyway, I've decided on Graphic Design, as I love art and being creative and I enjoy using programmes such as GIMP and Photoshop.

For GCSE, I've taken RE (Religious Education), History, Art and Media, and the compulsories, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

I'll find out my grades for these in August.

I have a fast track English Language and Literature GCSE (both B), I'm retaking my English Lang, and I'm on course for an English Lang AS Level which I'll have by January 2010.

For A Level, I want to take Media, Art, Psychology and Music Tech (I'd love to be a producer, but there's no industry for it round here really.)

However, my mother is adamant that I have to take English Language for A Level.

As the course would finish in January, and I'd only have the other 4 to do, I've been told that I can do this. However, my cousin's told my mother that 4 A Level's are only acheivable by A* - A students, so my mother now wants me to drop one of my options, as I'm not clever enough.

I really don't want to drop any of the subjects I'm taking though, and I genuinely think if I put the effort in I could do it.

Anyway, back on subject, if I wanted a career in graphic design, which A Levels should I be looking at taking?

And for people who've done their AS Levels, do you think it's acheivable to do the 5 options?

Sorry for how badly I've worded this lol, it's quite confusing, I know.

Any advice would be very much appreciated though, thank you.

-KassI want to go into Graphic Design as a career but I'm a little stuck on A Level options. Any advice?
A significant part of graphic design is communication – with clients, colleagues and with your audience. To that end I would include English Language in your options. At A level I did three “proper” A levels – History, Ancient History and English Literature (and General Studies which was essentially a multiple choice lucky dip and worthless). I kept up my interests in art and design in my free time. Then I did a Foundation Course and a 4 year BA course (over 25 years ago).

You seem to believe that you are “not clever enough”, take some advice from your teachers – they will know your potential and can be objective. But don't accept that you are “not clever enough”.I want to go into Graphic Design as a career but I'm a little stuck on A Level options. Any advice?
I think it is good that you are already thinking about options before college, however you don't necessarily have to do A levels to be a graphic designer - although it would most probably help if you wanted to do a design course at University. if not, then i think the person who commented about doing a bTech sounds like a good idea.

i am currently finishing my first year at college and have just finished my graphic design course today! i don't want to put you off anything you've said, i just thought i will offer my genuiene advice and thoughts to see if it helps to point you in the right direction! first of all, i will warn you that graphics AS level is a LOT of work. on the AQA syllabus anyway there is no formal summer exam, the exam for AS is basically another unit of work with a set theme and this means there is a lot of coursework, and i'm not saying that half-heartedly! if you are completely passionate about being a graphic designer and are prepared to put in the hours for it then you will cope fine with graphics at AS :) as far as i know this is the same for all art subjects at GCSE - photography, fine art, textiles etc.

secondly, from what i have heard about media at AS from my friends who have taken it and also from a careers adviser, it is such a common subject at AS that it isn't very highly regarded and unless you wanted to go to a career or go to a uni doing a strictly media based course, it probably wouldn't be of much use to you. my friends have also told me that it is a bit here and there and a few of them regret taking it, but on the other side, a lot of people i know really enjoy it and see it as worthwhile so i guess it depends on the person.

thirdly, taking english with an art subject is actually a good idea, even if it is not your personal choice. i am taking an english combined AS and i find it really helps in my graphics and vice versa, as both of the subjects require evaluation and analysis so it is very handy if you do both as you get a lot of practise and it especially helps to do with developing your work.

(sorry this is a very long answer haha) i know about 8 people who chose to do 5 AS levels at the beginning of year 12 - at AS level the normal number to take it 4, and most people carry on with 3 at A level - and only one of those 8 still does it. it's not necessarily that you have to be amazingly clever to do 5 AS levels, its more a case of whether you can stay on top of the work and manage your time well enough to do it. in the second year, it is not advised to do 4 of more A levels unless you can prove that you can actually handle the workload. in the end, universities only look at the best 3 A levels grades anyway, so my mentality is that i would rather do 3 A levels so i can spend more time on each of them and get a good grade in each, than sharing out my time between 4 and only getting average grades in each. personally, i know that this year i could not have done 5 subjects because there is so much work and i would have hardly got any time to relax and simply wouldn't have been able to keep up with work.

and finally, a last thing to thing about is that if you want to do a design course at uni, most universities want you to take an Art Foundation course first - basically staying on another year at college, or going to a college which does the course, and doing a year of pre-university degree work in order to get you up to scratch for when you do go to uni.

so basically at the end of that giant ramble, you should really think about whether you have the motivation and self control to be able to do all the work that is required to do graphic design in the future, especially through the A level route as it is a pretty tedious - but still enjoyable! - process. it might be worth investigating the bTech and other diploma options which may be more suitable for what you want to do and may be the easier way to go about it. or you could always speak to Connexions/a career advisor at your school, or ask about the courses when you go to college open days if you haven't been already. and lastly, if you do take a course at college and end up not liking it, don't worry! you can easily drop the subject and take up another instead and it is a very common thing for people to do in the first few weeks of college! also you shouldn't think about your A level options so soon - deciding to carry on the subjects into year 13 depends completely on how you have found the course, your grades, if you can handle the workload etc so you really shouldn't worry about it so early on cos you have plenty of time to decide :)

ao anyway i hope you can make some kind of sense out of this and i hope it helped!
Personally I'd give A levels amiss and do a full time arts course, like a foundation course like a BTEC.

You can still go on to do a higher BTEC or a degree, even a post graduate degree if you decide you want to get back into something more academic later on, but you just can't beat the fact that you will doing art, design and craft full time 5 days a week instead maybe 6 hours a week for your art A level. You will also experience a lot of off different art / design, not just graphics, and might find out you actually prefer illustration, fine art, ceramics etc!

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I need some advice on an AS exam retake. I've taken history, media, eng lang/lit and graphic design.?

Unfortunately i'm not doing so well in History. I've been trying to drop it for a few months now but have been encouraged to push on by my tutor and subject teacher. I've done so but just received my January exam result and failed. I knew it would happen, i'm just not cut out for it. I don't want a career in history, im predicted an As/Bs for the other subjects and i'm going to drop history at A2. However my subject teacher is asking me to retake. I don't know if their is any point or if it will look bad in regards to going to university. Advice needed really. Thanks : )I need some advice on an AS exam retake. I've taken history, media, eng lang/lit and graphic design.?
If you drop it, you will have one less grade to put on your uni application. If you keep going, you might get a good grade. However, if you keep going and do badly, just don't include the grade on your uni application.

Universities only know the grades that you tell them, so you might as well have a go anyway just in case you get a grade that's worth mentioning!

  • I'd love to design and build my own RC airplane (maybe 2 meter long)... Can anyone experienced give advice?

    Hi

I'll start off by telling your that I am a first year Aerospace Engineering student. I've took a year off now, and would like to try making my own remote control plane purely for leisure.

I want it to have an onboard 180deg camera (I think you'll understand what I mean by this) which would stream live video to the remote which I'd use to control it.

I want it to look like a typical aircraft (wings, propellors etc... maybe like a particular vintage aircraft, but I've not looked into this yet)

I'd also be interested in talking to people who are also serious about wanting to design and build a plane but are still in the very early stages like myself.

Thanks ppl xI'd love to design and build my own RC airplane (maybe 2 meter long)... Can anyone experienced give advice?
    http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/index.php

This forum has pretty much everything you could want about RC models.

Although I remember reading somewhere that flying your rc aircraft outside your line of sight is frowned upon and if you're flying it using your camera it is classed as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

I'm not exactly sure about this but I would check up on the laws on that sort of thing before progressing with your plans.

Good luck though.I'd love to design and build my own RC airplane (maybe 2 meter long)... Can anyone experienced give advice?

My sister and I plan to design and construct a quilt but I've never done this before... any advice?

My Grandma's 75th birthday is In March and my sister came up with the idea of making a quilt with pictures for her birthday. I agreed to work with her on it, but I've never done anything like this before. As for my sister, I think she might have helped construct a quilt once, but I'm not sure and I know she's never designed a quilt before. We both agreed that when we see each other on Christmas, we would present our design ideas to each other, decide on one and split up the work.

Any advise?????My sister and I plan to design and construct a quilt but I've never done this before... any advice?
You could actually do any quilt block that had a larger center square and put the photo there, but if you've never made a quilt before, you'll want to stick with a fairly simple pattern.

There are three basic issues you need to be prepared for:

    1. How to get the photos onto fabric.

    2. How to sew the quilt top.

    3. How to fasten the layers (top, batting, backing) together.

The first is easy. You can purchase fabric sheets that are treated to go right through an inkjet printer. Read the packaging to be sure that it's washable. There are several different brands and they should be available at most fabric and craft stores. This is not the same as transfer paper, where you print the photos onto paper and then iron it onto the fabric. That doesn't last as long or look as nice. Keep in mind that the stuff isn't cheap - plan carefully when you print the photos on it and then cut them apart, leaving 1/4'; extra all the way around the photos for your seam allowance.

The next part, sewing the top, is where all of the fun and most of the challenge lies. I'd advise picking up a basic beginner quilting book, like ';Start Quilting with Alex Anderson'; or ';Quilter's Complete Guide'; by Fons %26amp; Porter. This will help with info about rotary cutting, seam allowances, putting blocks together, etc. The simplest pattern would be just photos alternating with plain squares of fabric, like a checkerboard. You could also sew a strip of fabric on all four sides of the photo, like a frame, then sew the framed photos together. If you wanted to get a little more complicated, you could make simple four patch or nine patch blocks for the alternating squares. This would give you a diagonal chain effect. Get some graph paper and try drawing out your designs - it helps to put it on paper.

Finally, you need a way to fasten the layers together. If it's a relatively small quilt, you can just sew straight lines through the layers using a regular sewing machine. You'll need to learn about basting the layers together first. You also need to check the batting you choose so you know how far apart it can be quilted. Some batting has to be quilted as close as 3'; while other batting can be as far as 10'; apart. Instead of quilting, you might want to consider tying the quilt. This involves using embroidery floss, pearl cotton or yarn to thread through all three layers and back, then tying a secure knot to hold everything in place. You can tie the knots on the front of the quilt or on the back, depending on if you want the loose ends to be visible.

Check out this link for more quilting resources:

http://piecemealquilts.wordpress.com/qui鈥?/a>My sister and I plan to design and construct a quilt but I've never done this before... any advice?
    1. Don't worry too much about it being perfect. One of the biggest parts of this gift that she will love is that you two made it together, just for her.

    2. Think about and/or investigate things she likes. What's her favorite flower? Her favorite color? What kind of things do you remember about your childhood with her? Does she have any hobbies?

    3. Consider a simple design - make a number of squares that have the pictures on them, then put them together with panels of other fabric in between.

    4. Try and see if you can get some friends together for the last 'quilting' step - once the entire quilt is put together, you have to sew through all layers with thread to make it puffy here and there.

Read up on the links provided by the other answers, and have fun making this. Also, I can tell you from experience - once you have your plan, start working sooner rather than later. You'll be glad.

I intended to design and build my small 2-3 seat experimental jet aircraft, need some advice?

22yrs old, interested in aircrafts and flying since years ,i am not an aircraft engineer,i am studying about aerodynamics and designs since long time , i want to design my own aircraft ,build it and fly it under experimental aviation rules.

    my design:

    lenght: 4 - 4,5 metre

    height: 1,50 -1,80 metre

    single jet engine powered,

    empty weight=400kg-max 600kg

    seat=2-3

all aleminum alloy or composite material construction.

will have a long wingspan for nice and safe flying.

will design low drag aerodynamic fuselage shape,

and i will use Nasa's airfoils or common used airfoil types.

Semi-monocoque fuselage construction as modern aircraft.

i will calculate design's every step with math and computer test. i am able to do g-force testing on wings, able to set Cg of aircraft.

anyway after design the project,i will send it to FAA with the name of aircraft engineer friend. when they approve design.i can begin building.

what you think about my project and what you will advice?

Advice on my intended majors and minor for a career in video game design?

I've poked around a little bit about video game design, and from what I've gathered, it's primarily about math and writing, with a background in Computer Science and the Arts to help communicate your ideas.

I'm a student at UCSD, and I intend to double major in Communication and Psychology, but I'm unsure of whether to minor in ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts) or Computer Science. Which would help me more to get into this field? Any advice on this from someone in the gaming industry would be greatly appreciated. If my majors are flat out off as well, please let me know.

im not sure where you got your information but its horrible general. for programmers and designers it needs more math and computer science stuff, not so much for designers though. im from the art institute of california los angeles(last two quarters) i've heard enough from industry professionals to know that its different for each career in video games. if your a programmer, go for the math and computer sciences. if your a designer, computer sciences and art, especially 3d art. for artist and animators, you will need quick knowledge of traditional art, but then into 3d art. if your going to a university for art or animation, get out. there is no future in a place that generalizes in a career that needs specialists.

as for the programming/engineering or designers i guess that is fine, but that type of knowledge will only get you so farAdvice on my intended majors and minor for a career in video game design?
There are 3 ways you can work with games: programming, design, and business. You'll need excellent math skills for all 3 of those areas, as well as plenty of Computer Science knowledge.

If you're very artistic, you can combine visual arts and computer science and learn 3D design. If you're very mathematical and very logical, you can learn how to program.

If you think you have good people skills, you can try to business-side of gaming, where you would work on marketing campaigns, manage offices, develop business strategies, or work on accounting/financing for game companies.

Communication and Psychology are both useful if you want to go into marketing. They won't help you develop games at all. It's an unbelievably, intensely mathematical/specialized set of skills that you need to develop to do it professionally.
If you're right-brained, major and minor in arts subjects. If you're left-brained, major in programming subjects. People with short legs shouldn't run races and people shouldn't pursue careers in the direction opposite that in which their brains work. (The last good analytical artist was Leonardo da Vinci, and we probably have a few hundred years more until another one comes along.)

Zencart is a good product to look into.

To test it locally a good operating system is Fedora - if you install that then its fairly simple to install the applications that Zencart needs - Apache, SQL, MyPHP etc.

There are plenty of people who have good advice on this on the internet so if you look up for example ';fedora apache'; you find some excellent guides.

Getting these working in windows is sometimes a bit hit and miss but using Fedora works great - you can then test Zencart locally without needing to upload everything to a web site. We found when trying to do this with Windows that Apache or PHP would often stop working or the file permissions would be a pain to get right, something that's very easy to do in Linux i.e Fedora.

Once your happy with it you can then get it installed on your web site and upload your unique pages so the site is customized - with Zencart you create a copy of the master file and it knows to use that file rather than the original so changing it is quite straight forward.

I helped a friend do this and it works great doing it this way, otherwise you are constantly uploading and downloading files from your web site due to slight amendments.

I had Fedora installed on a PC, installed the extra programs such as Apache etc and Zencart and then had a basic shop running in under two hours.

You could use Ubuntu server and install whats called a Lamp server, this includes Apache, MyPHP etc but I'e not done it with ubuntu so can't comment on any issues you might have.

For that reason at the moment my choice would be the two items I have actually had success on, Fedora and Zencart.

  • Need some advice towards the direction of my career! w/ a Graphic Design diploma?

I completed a studying at a college with a diploma in graphic design, and I am currently having second thoughts about where potential careers are what's happening to the graphic design industry (wages/job opportunities). I'm having trouble even finding my first job and its been 5-6 months now, with only minimal freelance and volunteer opportunities... its rather frustrating. I was just wondering if I should consider studying more or focus harder on finding jobs. I'm open to many career ideas and directions, possibly go further into web design, animation or aim for a computer science degree (having web/software behind my back, and also programming and computer repair). What should I do??

I love art and design, been doing it all my life. I'm currently upgrading my portfolio but I wanna see graphic design and related jobs as viable careers with job security/benefits. I'm stuck, and quite hesitant. I had plans to be sure to find my first jobs and positions, but things changed and didn't happen, and I need to sort things out.Need some advice towards the direction of my career! w/ a Graphic Design diploma?

Well what are you wanting to design?

I've just started an interior design course with limperts, can anybody give me some advice?

I'm a creative person(well i think so anyway lol)so i decided to give this course a go,but im feeling that the first assignment is giving me trouble, the assignment is create a mood board and a sample board,i've had a couple of ideas, but i just keep rethinking everything and im afraid im gonna do it wrong,i know that a mood board is what feeling the board bring to mind and the sample board is that your furnishings wall colour and basically all the elements to make your room the way you want it(be it colours and tones)but its just the first lesson,so am i thinkin to much ahead as in tones and colours?are first assignment is 2 create a mood board and sample board,i have the mood board done, its for a sittin room,so ive put images of things tthat depict that type of emotion, like comfort, togetherness, tranquility, relaxat鈥?warmth, but im kinda stuck on the sample board, shud i be bringin the elements of the pictures from the mood board in,or just the colours that act upon d feelin?I've just started an interior design course with limperts, can anybody give me some advice?
I would say that it should be finish samples that help to create the feelings you're trying to show on the mood board. The mood board should portray what feelings/emotions you are trying to capture with the design. So the finish samples can show this through the different textures, different styles, and different colors...whatever you think shows this best.

  • Advice: How much would a start-up Software/Web-design company roughly expect to make in a year?

I'm currently a freelance software and web developer thinking of setting up my own company. At present I'm making a decent enough profit but not nearly as much as I would in a full time job.

I've been thinking of taking a few more developers under my wing so enable me to take on much larger contracts but I'm worried that this still might not make me as much as working full time.

Does anyone have any rough statistics or profit info that could calm my nerves? :)Advice: How much would a start-up Software/Web-design company roughly expect to make in a year?
It doesn't mean that you would earn more profit if you had a full time job than you would make with your own company. Full time job would offer you fixed salary and you could get some bonuses now and then, but that is all.

On the other hand if you are working as freelance web designer, you dictate how much you will earn. If you have a team of web designers, you can accept larger projects and even more of them at the same time and earn much more money than you would working for a fixed salary.

You may have some problems in the beginning, but as your clients grow in numbers, they will recommend you to others and for a very short time you could have a very nice income.

I believe that you already have some satisfied clients. The great place to find some more is GetAFreelancer (if you are already not familiar with them):

    http://www.nettrafficsecrets.com/res/GAF

There are many web design and software design jobs posted constantly and they will always accept new designer. Opening account is free. Write a good profile, include some examples of your previous work and bid for as many projects as you can. You may also find there employers that may hire you to work full time for them.

When you get some positive feedbacks, they will help you find even more work.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

You need to develop a valid business plan. Go to http://www.sba.gov , http://www.score.org or http://www.bplan.com for instructions on how to write a business plan and sample business plans.

Then, go to http://www.score.org/index.html and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor to review your business plan.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.

Advice for a coder trying to start a web design company?

    Hello.

I have been programming for about eight years now and doing web development for five or so of those. I do not have much talent in regards to the actual design of a web page (the art aspects), but I am a guru when it comes to the coding behind a site.

So my question is, and more to people who have experience in this type of situation, how should I find people to do the actual design for my clients? Should I find a permanent ';team member';? Should I just contract the design parts out to different people? If I do this, what if my client decides he/she doesn't want what the people I contracted create?

Basically I'm looking for any and all advice pertaining the topic at hand. I'm going to need all the help I can get.

Thanks.Advice for a coder trying to start a web design company?
It's always hard to have to subcontract your work, especially in your situation for every project you work on. Essentially, you would have to find a web designer or graphic designer to partner with. You would need to set up a contract agreement with this designer to include clauses should your client not like the design created. As long as the designer is flexible and willing to work with your terms or meet you halfway, you should be good. I generally allow 3 revisions with my design work and I state that the revision cannot deviate drastically from the original design direction. That's something you may want to consider when writing up your contract agreement for your clients. Good luck.

ok so in about 5.6 months im planing on getting my 1 tattoo or tattoos as im thinking about getting 2

im thinking about a hooded crow or common raven tattoo i want them on my outter calfs ( on my legs)

those are some of the images i will be going with to the artist :

the image i had on my mind was to get the 1st pictures as the design and underneath to have a quote and it will start somewhere under my knee and going all the way down to my ankle/heel and them on the other leg the same bird but with the 2nd part of the quote

or getting a big ( about a foot) long raven split it into 2 part and to have each part on each leg so that when the calfs will meet it will form a full raven

and now im thinking about getting one of the crows ( the drawing or the picture) and under the birds having like 10 small black feathers

I need some advice.what else can i add to this design ??? ?
Fantastic! The flock of small crows is by far my favorite. I think the single large crow won't go as well on your leg as the grouping, it will be much more pleasing to the eye because there will be a focal point no matter what part of the leg you're looking at.

Putting half a crow on one leg and half on the other sounds really cool, but in practice it never comes out right. Sure it looks great when you press your legs together, but it'll look really off when you stand normally. Plus you might look a little silly pressing your calves together to show off your tat. Lol.

I have a crow very similar to the drawing, on my ankle (fully shaded of course) and I absolutely love it! It's only about two inches tall though, so that makes a big difference.I need some advice.what else can i add to this design ??? ?
i would go with the pic of multiple birds. that design is abslouteltly awesome. other things you can add would be smoke. any good tattoo artist can do smoke. and with smoke, you can ake it do anydesign you want and add more detail to the tat itself
i think you should get something else like a rose or a star ( those are cute on guys ) or like a really neonic colorful crow :))
I agree with not splitting the tatoo.
    Don`t split the bird
I'd stick with the first design. it's sick and will be very easy to add to later if you so choose. the idea of splitting them is a pretty kewl one, but one thing to think about, how often are you going to be seen with you legs perfectly pressed together. with that in mind, option a is probably gonna be your best bet. doesn't mean you can't carry a scene from one leg to another like that, but i wouldn't split up the bird.

that's just my opinion though. :)

  • Need Advice on getting into the Creative/Art/Design industry?

    I need some advice.

I've been to university and finished a degree, but now am not interested in that anymore.

I want to pursue my interest in art work particularly in the visual presentation of things, deciding what colour, layout etc looks best - what is this called in career terms and how can i work for someone eventhough i have no proper experience or portfolio (except work i've kept from high school).

I've started looking for vacancies but they want people with some kind of experience. How do i get a company to take me on. I'm don't mind training and learning with a company - but knowone gives you a chance to even do that.Need Advice on getting into the Creative/Art/Design industry?
Familiarize yourself with Adobe Creative Suite!!! If you want to get into design, you need to be somewhat fluent in these programs. They are a designer's right hand...literally...your hand becomes part of your mouse. Once you get that down, start with business cards, wedding invitation, and stationary packages for friends, family and local businesses. If you are very determined and work hard, you can become successful on your own. I did not major in graphic design and this is how I got started. You have to be able to market yourself. Anytime you hear someone say they need a business card, jump in and offer - modestly if possible. Once you get a few things done, build yourself a website to keep as a live portfolio and make business cards for yourself. Try bartering with friends who are starting new business ventures, this way you can get some great stuff and they can get some design work. I've gotten all kinds of stuff - jewelry, yard work, deck remodeling, hair styles, and all of my facials and makeup for my wedding. It's a lot of fun making someone's business look good on paper. Make that your personal motto, and you'll make yourself look good. When it comes to getting paid, don't overprice yourself but don't sell yourself short either. Good luck!Need Advice on getting into the Creative/Art/Design industry?
Try sign making. It is one of the best ways to get in on what happens in your city, where the art goes, what it is ,and whose art it does well with.Say a sculpture on a windy corner that changes with the wind.or Realtor signs.
If you can narrow your list down and come up with some better definitions of what you want to do the answers might come a little easier. It sounds like you are interested in either Graphic Design or possibly some other type visual presentation dealing with displays of some sort. I recommend taking a class or two to get some work in your portfolio. Once you have a few things to show you can probably find an paid/un-paid internship with a design firm.

If that doesn't help, google different jobs you are interested in and see what the companies are looking for. You might be able to make a portfolio by just finding examples of what you want to do and making your own version of that.

Advice please on learning Photoshop or Paintshop for web design applications.?

I am learning web design and know very little about how to use Photoshop or Paintshop.

Is there an online resource where I can take class that starts from the very beginning? A ';Photoshop For Dummies'; class would be perfect.

Some really good tutorial instruction would work too.

Also, I know that there are several versions of Photoshop available. Which one would be the best for me to buy to use for web design?

I experienced, that most of web designers and popular web design studios use Photoshop to paint web site sketches. Also they work in Illustrator to get icons, characters, illustrations and everything else, which should look like vector made.

Advice on self teaching of Web & Database Design?

When I was in my early teens, I played around with Web Design and Networking. Without any guidance or books, I taught myself some of the fundamentals and additional information. However, due to a bad time with IT staff in college (who had no passion for the subject), I lost interest.

Despite this, after a 6 year absence, I've decided to re-ignite my passion for Web %26amp; Database Design.

I would like to self teach myself to build web sites with full interactive capabilities and features with a view to eventually building something complex for a commercial venture.

However, with so many different scripting languages and Database platforms around, please could the good people reading this point me in the right direction and refresh me with what order I need to start learning things in (i.e.: What are the basics, what would I then move onto to build upon this etc..).

All of your help is appreciated.Advice on self teaching of Web %26amp; Database Design?
The landscape has changed since you were last into it. I would consider learning the Microsoft VB.NET (and ASP.NET) platform.

You'll also need to know SQL if you're planning on interacting with any database tables.

Another entry-level product that you can learn a lot with is Microsoft Expression Web.

    Fashion Design Advice??

Since I was 5, I have wanted to be a fashion designer. Now, in my late 20s, I'm trying to figure out what I want to do ';when I grow up,'; and this is what I keep coming back to. I can draw clothes with my eyes shut and I can come up with new ideas and designs without ever really trying. At night, I don't count sheep to go to sleep, I dream up new gowns for different actresses and imagine them wearing them down the red carpet. I'm extremely creative, and I know that if I had the opportunity, I'd be successful. The problem is that I can't sew.

So basically, I'd like some advice from anyone else who taught themselves how to be a clothes maker. I'm so overwhelmed that I don't know where to begin, and I'm hoping someone here can give me the direction and the proverbial ';kick in the ***'; that I need to get on with it.

Thanks so much :)Fashion Design Advice??
well some designers think of their own stuff but have others sew it for them.Fashion Design Advice??
im the same as you. i have always wanted to become a fashion designer. i can draw, and i do think of celebs in the redcarpet wearing my cloths. ( im only 14 but have high hopes) im also very creative and i have the same problem, i cant really sew.. but im pretty sure that there are tons of sewing classes all around. you can try going to a sewing class near you. or you can buy fashion designing books based on how to start sewing. there around book stores, and i bet that starting with a sewing class or reading a book with instructions might give you that push you asked for..lots of luck..=]
First, take up sewing lessons and buy or borrow some books about the basics of making clothes. Then, after you learn the basics, you can start creating your visions! GOOD LUCK!
Take some classes. There are lots of schools that are just for fashion designers. Check out some of the colleges and trade schools in your area and see whats available.
omg you are amazing. and guess what i can sew so maybe i dont know if you would want to but i can give you tips or even teach you how to sew im amazing with the machine but i cant draw for my life. i think of all these good designs but i just cant draw them. i can make them hapen with out paper. so im thinking maybe you can help me draw and i can help you sew.

    Tattoo design advice...?

Tomorrow I will be getting a tattoo on my wrist It will say ';saved by grace'; and I'm debating how it should go. One way would be just to write in in script across my wrist. Plain and simple. The other way would be in kind of a crossword puzzle. SAVED would be vertical, ';by'; would be smaller and under the D horizontally and GRACE would be going across the 'A' of SAVED. It would make the shape of a cross. I like that the plain horizontal script is subtle, but I like how the cross has meaning in form.

The reason I'm asking is not that I feel like I'll regret one way or the other. I just like aspects about both of them. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!Tattoo design advice...?
I think just having it in script would be better, it would be easier to read and you wouldn't have people grabbing your arm to try and figure it out.Tattoo design advice...?
You have to go with your gut on this one, as this is a forever thing. I like the simple design personally, it's simple and not clever, which is sometimes good in a tattoo.

Good luck, and I prefer the more simple design, but ultimately it is up to you and your gut feeling.
Both sound nice but I think the plain script will look better.
    i hate script tattoos

    Tattoo design advice?

i want a tattoo for my daughter. she's very rebelious, but also very prissy. i was thinking about this design..

    but i'm not sure.

    any other suggestions?Tattoo design advice?
You mean a tattoo on you that represents your daughter, right? I like the one you picked.

My hubby got a tatoo of a devil baby with a halo when our son was born.

How about a prissy little angel with devil horns?Tattoo design advice?
if your daughter is a new born or infant (category you chose)

how do you know she is rebelious and prissy?

Sounds like thats what you want her to be.

    tattoo look kool
I love it, I'm going to get my daughter's name tatooed on my neck.
    i don't like it personally.
The kiss of death? I'm confused how this represents your daughter because it seems like a negative connotation to me.
I think it's a cool design, but all the tattoos of lips that i have seen look like crap. So just be careful when picking the artist. have fun!
I like it , wish i would have thought of it . Who is getting the tattooo , you or your daughter ? That would be cute on the ankle or on the shoulder .

I am getting a tatto for my son on my leg . It is his portrait , from the very first picture at the hospital with his name and b-day
    Its cute. I like it.

How old is your daughter and where is she going to put it?
get her hand print, my boyfriend plans on getting our babys hand print.
that would not make me think of my daughter, rather trashy

    Interior Design Advice!?

Hi, I am a 21 yr old male and my boyfriend and I are in the process of re-decorating our home and we are now trying to figure out what we are going to do in our bedroom. Right now the walls are white and we deffinetly want the room painted to liven it up a little. We both agree that we want the color of the walls to be versatile enough that if we want/need to change the bedding or the decore it is going to transition smoothly. The obvious choice is to leave the walls white but we deffinetly want some color. Interior Design Advice!?
I suggest you go with a nice neutral like a linen beige, a subtle yellow (with a beige undertone - Lowes has a color called Pear in the Eddie Bower line that is awesome), browns or greens. Then you can play with your accessories, the bedding, curtains, etc. If you start with nice earth tones you can change the colors of your accessories with no problem.

DON'T leave your walls white that is too stark and impersonal. Warm it up with some color ;)

Here is a picture where I have that Pear color and a nice neutral Green on the other wall. The green is also from Lowes. I believe it's American Tradition and the color is something willow. If I find the swatch I will update my answer.

    http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q28/X鈥?/a>

    Good luck!

    Interior Design Advice!?
If you want color, you need to pick a color that will blend with

any color. Some natural colors like sand, taupe, pale yellow,

light olive, and light mocha. These colors are versatile. You can use accents with bright colors or dark colors. These accents will bring your room together. Also, your window treatments can be such to let sunlight in and get a fresh clean feel for the room.

Look at department store catalogues. Look at the bedding section to see how the bedroom is displayed. Notice the

walls and the decor in the room. You may come to a decision just by what you see.

    Good Luck!

Take your cue from the color scheme already going on in the house. Keep the tone and sheen of the paint close to what is already in the house.
    don't paint

gild the ceiling with copper and have venetian plaster applied to the walls

    Fashion Design advice??

I like designing fashion but there is a problem, I CAN'T DRAW!!! Thats a big problem because I have these great ideas and I can't draw them. I usually just desribe them on paper but I really want to draw my designs. I may want to switch my College class to fashion design. So could someone give me some advice for drawing??? - Thanks!!!Fashion Design advice??
I am not the best artist either and I do want to be a fashion designer too. What I do is make the person in my art very abstract. I mean, you can see that its a jacket and trousers. Then I go in with watercolor and paint, very roughly, the colors I want and wear. Then I let it dry. Then I go in and put the deatil, also very roughly. LIke the pockets and buttons and that sort of thing. then I write what fabrics I want on the top left of the page.

I have a book you might find ideas in: Fashion by Kate Spade. Its very simple and I like the way she illustrates

Also, places like Joanns and Michaels offer classes. Go check those out. Even if you are drawin buildings, then you are controlling the pencil and that is what you might be lacking!

    Hope I helped!Fashion Design advice??
buy books on drawing the human figure

Take an art class. But if you see the designs in your head, your talent will allow you to transfer them straight to fabric and bring them to life. I know so many people who sew without patterns, formal training or pictures period. Look at all the fly clothes Beyonce's mom makes for her, she doesn't use a pattern. She memorized Beyonce's body and just sews away and everything fits perfectly. If you have this type of talent, you have nothing to worry about. With me, it's writing. I would almost get in trouble in school when the teacher made us turn in a roughdraft paper because my thoughts don't have to be together beforehand. Once I get in my writing mode and shut down the world around me, I don't need a roughdraft, my writing is usually good-to-go.
How about before you start to sketch them, why don't you practice with like stencils or something on a piece of paper. Then if you feel they are great then just trace them over another paper but sketch lightly so it dosen't show the pencil mark when you color in your color designs. Hope it helps! Enjoyy!%26lt;3
you can learn to draw, i did in my architectual classes
OH MY GOODNESS!! i have the EXACT same problem. I have these wonderful design ideas but i can only see the perfect picture in my head and can't put it on paper!! dont give up!! do you know someone who can draw well?? ask them for help. or try taking an art class. go to google and type in drawing tips. hope i helped and good luck!! :]]
Try copying outfits to paper and practice...It worked for me...
Practicing ten minutes a day can help you improve greatly. Also learning to really look at what you drawing can help to. Where curves are, where there are straight lines, %26amp;c. You don't have to be a great artist, a lot of fashion designers really exaggerate in the pictures they draw.

  • Tattoo design advice?

Hi, I was wondering if some of you could help me out...

I'm looking at getting a second tattoo, and would want it to represent strength, perseverance, and having overcome hardships. I was thinking a koi fish, or phoenix, but what would be other designs that would represent this?

PS. I'm looking for something more feminine than masculine.Tattoo design advice?
the yin yang in aisian cultures are actually represented by a dragon and tiger.

and pheonixs are good to get but think it will have to be big to get detail in. personally the koifish swimming up stream on your back would look the nicest, delicate colourful light and feminine. that would be your best bet i think.Tattoo design advice?
go sit and write down those words, then strat drawing what you feel or truely see in those words, sometimes it ends up cool, then you design your own one
If you get a koi fish, make sure it is swimming upstream. That would represent your ability to overcome obstacles.

In addition to resurrection, the phoenix also represents the feminine side of the yang in Asian cultures - a great idea. Check out the link below for lots of cool ideas:
