I'm in the process of designing a 4 wheeled mountain bike - or as i call it, a Quadcycle, for my A Level Product Design Major Project. I am confident it will work, it will need a fair amount of suspension but what other factors will bear thinking about? It will need gears too... Any information / ideas at all on this subject will be greatly appreciated - materials, existing products, constraints, experiences... anything! Do you think it's a cool idea? Any feedback is appreciated!Designing A 4-Wheeled Bicycle - A Quadcycle. Need advice from anyone with knowledge on bikes!?

In addition to Andy's link, I would contact John Castellano. This man invented the sweet spot full suspension bike, which is still my favorite design. He has also designed off road wheelchairs. If anyone can get you started in the right direction, I'm betting he can. He's also cool enough to answer emails himself. Check him out below:

Your major constraint is horsepower.
All of the things you need to do to make a 4 wheel human powered vehicle are working against it.
1. Weight. You are adding a significant number of components, and every one of them has a mass. None of them add to horsepower.
2. Rolling resistance. 4 wheels have nominally twice the rolling resistance of two.
3. Aerodynamics. You will be adding aero drag with extra frame components and wheels. A recumbent position would offset this to some degree, but you've ruled that out.
As my brother discovered when he designed and made a 2 wheel drive bicycle, the additional drivetrain power losses made it nothing more than an interesting design exercise. There were were only a very few limited circumstances (like loose sand) where the 2 wheel drive would outperform a standard bike, and the power required made those rides exhausting and short.
Back in the early 80's when AWD cars like the Audi Quattro were the hot new thing in racing, the rule of thumb was that the improved traction/handling/control of the AWD was offset by power losses unless you had well over 100hp to work with. Its a mighty good cyclist that can generate more than .5 hp for more than a short time.
Not saying you shouldn't do it - it will be a valuable learning experience. Just pay attention to weight and drag, and don't expect any kind of spectacular results.

Designing a C&C cage...a little advice please?
i am designing a C%26amp;C cage soon. I have no pigs yet but will be getting some after the summer!! (yay I'm sooo excited! by the way i'm adopting!) anyways i was thinking to start simple. a 2 grids x 3 grids cage with a 1 grid by 1 grid hayloft...does this sound ok...or should i make it a 1x2 hayloft? I'm not sure how many grids i will have left over soo...probably i will buy 1 box from bed bath and beyond (yes the nearest one near my home carries them) suggestions please...? ThanksDesigning a C%26amp;C cage...a little advice please?
You should build the c%26amp;c cage as big as you can depending on how many guinea pigs you want to keep in it.
I just built my c%26amp;c cage last weekend. I have 4 guinea pigs, so I made a 2-by 5 cage with a 2-by-2 second story.
Just make sure you have a suitable place to keep the cage. I tryed keeping mine in my bedroom but found that it took up too much room and they were pretty smelly so I moved them into the shed.
I bought my grids off trade me (a NZ site-like ebay) for $10 plus shipping=$23.
For the bedding, I use a thick layer of newspaper, a layer of old towels and then a surface layer of fleece. The fleece was quite cheap-I got six 2m-by-2m for $36.
I bought a shmpoo rack for $3 to use as a hay rack and some long multipurpose trays for vege bowls.
I made a kitchen area(2-by-2 grid) and put pine shavings on the floor-apparantly you shouldnt use pine because it can cause respritory problems but I didnt realise when I bought it.
So overall it cost me around $120-I think thats about $60 US so it was much cheaper than buying a small hutch or something.
Im only keeping my guinea pigs in their c%26amp;c cage for the winter and then il move them back out into their huge outdoor hutch for the summer.
I am in the process of making a film of my c%26amp;c cage so you can go and check it out if you want-It should be ready in a couple of days. I will upload it onto youtube; my channel name is ';enil0rac';
To find out more you can go onto the c%26amp;c cage website and if you click on ';photo galleries'; at the top of the page, you can see heaps of photos of other peoples designs and stuff.
Hope Ive helped
Good luckDesigning a C%26amp;C cage...a little advice please?
Each guinea pig is supposed to have 4 sq. feet of space so if you are getting two, this is a bit small, though is you need to it's still ok. A 3x3 cage would not take many more grids, and would give your pets the space they should have. It would only take 12 grids to make the whole bottom story. Then the hayloft should take 2 or 3, the ramp 2... It would work!
THAT SOUNDS GRETA BUT how many pigs are you gonna get?
i would say that is good for 2 or maybe 3 but no more
i have 2 babys and i have a c%26amp;c cage
in withe it is only 1 grid in leangth it is 3 grids
but hopefully i am getting one more gris in withe and another levelskin

Argh! help! bit of a career problem, do i go into designing/art or into medicine? any advice?
you see, i'm in a bit of a dilema. i'm stuck between persuing a career in becoming a doctor or one in creative art and design. i'm going to be choosing my a-levels soon and i need to have some sort of idea as to what to do later so that i don't close doors to a certain career and choose wisely coz there aint no turnin back. as you can see i'm torn between 2 end of the spectrum. medicine or design. my heart or my head.
i really want to become a doctor so that i can help people and save lives. but then i really want to do designing and stuff because i really enjoy it and i'm good at that kind of stuff and maybe if i'm really successful i can donate lots of money to charity. however, i can't be sure that i'm successful and with the current economic situation, i'm not sure that the career is stable and may not be able to donate money, whereas, if i were a doctor, i'd have a stable job, and i'd be really pleased that i'd helped people and will be able to sleep at night sound(ish). but i'm not sure i can get into a medical career with all the competition thats about. i mean, i'm kinda good at chem, phys and specially bio, but i know so much more people tonnes better than me at science and want to become a doctor.
and i'm better at arty subjects anyway. but i'm so confuzzled!
my heart want's me to become a doctor because i want to help people
my head wants me to become a designer type person to earn money to help people.
eek! which do i choose?
any advice?

lol for your alevels u can choose art as well as chem biology so that isnt a big problem. i have finished college and have met people who have done law and sciences two opposites and apparently he is now going into radiography (x-rays). c no 1 is sure wat dey want to do u will have to do some work experience and research in them career areas which u want to go in. n remember waeva u do is gna b a challenge so u beta b up 4 it.

those are two opposite ends of the galaxy-no guarantees you would get into med school and/or survive once you got there and you're talking twice as much school and 4 times the cost for a doctor - nursing makes good money - start your career a lot quicker - you would have actually have time to work on art part time if you already have the talent

Designing a bedroom..need some advice..?
I'm designing a master bedroom and en-suite bathroom for a course i'm doing. I have been given a piece of fabric to be used for light upholstery or curtains etc. the fabric is striped faded blue, brown n greeny yellow..quite nice but the only problem is I am completely stumped as to what colours to go with for the bedroom and bathroom. Like what colour should i do the walls and what colour bedding should i use to go with the fabric i have been given. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance!!!Designing a bedroom..need some advice..?
You can use florals, paisley or damask with stripes as long as the colors coordinate. Mixing patterns makes a room more interesting too. Use the fabric for curtains and maybe an accent pillow and get bedding like one of these:

Having bargain fabric is not necessarily a reason to use it.
Since you want fluid color flow between the bedroom and bathroom What color are the tiles (floor and bath area) in the bathroom? That is quite permanent unless you are going to remodel it ... So do those function with the fabric? Is the tile color in the fabric.
What woods are the bedroom furniture composed of? Decorating takes enormous thought. Take a piece of the fabric and start a color board and begin to put together your choices on color and see what works.
Consider the soft lime color for walls. You MUST carry a color swatch of the fabric for matching.
Cream or off white for bed linens with chocolate accents. Chocolate glossy pottery around the room as accents.
The fabric for the windows (how many yards do you have, one window would take at least 5 yards) Or use it for one or two throw pillows in the room with chocolate pillows and of course one to match the lime walls.
Have fun, It sounds like a great project.

Advice on Interior Designing? ?
I'm in yr 7 going in yr 8, when i'm older i want to get into interior designing. what subjects should i be focusing on to get the job i want, what should i be doing to help me get that job?? any feedback on interior designing??Advice on Interior Designing? ?
Concentrate on some art classes, math and history. The history comes in play, to know names of styles of architecture, cabinetry and so on. If your school offers the following classes, take them as well:
Accounting, Personal Finance and any Business Classes.
If it's still around, a Home Economics class(I think now they call it something like Domestic something???), would be good as well. One semester on cooking(helps with learning basic kitchen layout), one semester of sewing(helps with fabrics, texture, etc.) and of course the other semester is a general time of other things one should know around the house(still helps in the business world as well!)
When you have some time, study interior design sites. Look in magazines, watch HGTV, Bravo and other networks, that offer design programs. Now we all know some of them are a little hokie! But most offer good basic design principles. Also, go to the library, find books that explain the color wheel. Learn about complimentary or contrasting colors, how they all work or don't work together.
Here are some links to good sites:
http://www.karamann.com/?gclid=CKzygrWpq鈥?/a>
http://www.imichaelinteriordesign.com/
http://www.pellinteriors.com/bedroom.htm
You may want to decide along the way, if you want to concentrate on residential design, commercial design, some of both or if you want to concentrate on specific areas of the house, like living room and bedrooms only.

start subscribing to a bunch of magazines: house beautiful, elle decor, metropolitan home, dwell... there are so many... and even more important, watch HGTV obsessively and you will learn so much! good luck. great profession!
